Yet advancement, in an ironic way, may and rather frequently does lead to harm. As technology advances rapidly, we do lose our identities and get The society is manipulated in thinking to believe a flawless world exists and the way people live in media is the way humanity should live as well. In The Truman Show we follow the man, Truman Burbank round the clock. All over the world people watches his daily life in the fake city, which is actually just a piece of scenery in Hollywood. By putting up thousands of cameras all over the city, it is possible for the audience from all over the world to follow every step he takes through the TV.

The only one who believes it is the real world is the main character, Truman. He is living a perfect life with a beautiful wife and a great job in a town where everybody likes him. But one day Truman gets the suspicion, that everything is planned and that he might be monitored. Before taking this course, I had yet to known how much thought directors and producers put in upon creating a movie. From the three different movies that we have seen so far in the class, I have chosen to write on Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I watched this movie without knowledge of the storyline or any expectations. At the end of the movie though, I was stunned- not only by the surprising ending but also by the narrative design, mise-en-scene, and cinematography. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind creatively uses a non-traditional structure, colors….

Everything, including the weather, was controlled in a huge Hollywood dome. Truman grew up having no idea he was being watched every hour of the day, and that every step he took was being viewed by millions all over the globe. As the show progressed, it became clear how much media influenced Truman's life, and also how Christof played a huge role in Truman's well-being. First, the influence of media affects our lives in many ways. Therefore, the show had to generate an income by advertising products to the viewers.

For example, when Truman's wife showed off her recent purchase, a Chef Pal, she listed many unique characteristics about the product, hoping some of the millions of viewers would purchase it. This shows how much commercials and advertising can persuade us to purchase a product. Without even realizing it, TV viewing can influence people's purchases. Second, a form of media displayed in the show can be described as broadcast media. The Truman Show was broadcasted all over the world and millions of people were watching it. You could see this because during the movie people were shown watching the show in various places. For example, there was a man watching TV while in his bathtub and two security guards enjoyed the show while on patrol.

This shows how TV can be addictive, and possibly interfere with our ability to complete everyday tasks. Finally, Truman was basically living in an artificial world. Everything was planned, and the actors were well educated to make Truman believe everything about his life existed in Seahaven. This shows how people can be influenced to believe that something is real or true but in reality it is not. She argues that what he is doing is wrong but he rebuts this, asking if Seahaven is like a prison if it is, practically, a utopia. Like any film, The Truman Show has a mix of diegetic and non-diegetic sound. Diegetic sound is sound coming from within the scene - it is a part of the mise-en-scene.

In a lot of the scenes when Truman is oblivious to the lies, classical music plays in the background. This adds to the happy, peaceful atmosphere of Seahaven. The camera work in the film adds to the story. Some of the many shots used are the:. Fisheye lenses are used in several scenes. This could have been to make Truman seem like a fish trapped in a bowl - Seahaven. The way the camera moves helps to convey emotion in scenes. When Truman speaks, the camera is relatively still, making it seem real. Then, as we cut to other characters in unnatural scenes, the shot is filled with many zooms, pans and tilts.

This creates a feeling of disconnection between the characters. In the scenes where everything is happy and calm, there are bright lights and vibrant colours. Then, in other scenes, there is a dark and gloomy look, with blue tones, to evoke a sense of fear and sadness in viewers. The bright colours could be a symbol of the artificiality of Seahaven. When Truman meets Sylvia, in character as Lauren, he is wearing dull colours and she is wearing bright red. Years later, as Truman pretends to believe the lies, just before he escapes, he wears brighter colours than ever before. As Truman literally breaks the fourth wall, just before he is about to escape, he is surrounded by bright blue colours and is wearing the darkest colours he ever has.

Trumans interactions with his world and relationships were both real and imaginary. They were real because they were the actual conditions that he interacted with and imaginary because of the false representations of reality that were offered to him, e. The director of The Truman Show, Peter Weir, uses metaphors to project images to the audience. The audience is forced to look at the modern television world that they are surrounded by and the way that the big companies twist news, reality shows, political affairs in to theatrical illusions. This makes the audience think about the society they live in and the way media portrays and exploits lives.

These relationships range from people who barely feel a relation to Truman as a product such as Christof and the audience. Additionally there a people who feel a real connection to Truman such as Sylvia, this is made visible as the effects of her removal. What I aim to do with this rhetorical analysis is bring forth to the reader a deeply immersive look at the rhetorical concepts present in the film The Truman Show. It is important for a viewer to fully understand the underlying messages and subtle undertones in between the lines, so to speak. Most important to note, Truman Burbank has no clue that his whole life has been little more than just a television program produced on a grand scale to produce the image of reality in a dome.

The Truman Show blends ethos, logos, and pathos together in a symphony of self-discovery and power over an adversary, whether physical or spiritual. Truman is forced into relationships. He cannot escape the dome because of his fears and physical barriers that Christof has created. For this event paper, I decided to see a movie on the bottom floor of the J Standish Library at Siena College. I saw The Truman Show starring Jim Carrey who played Truman Burbank. The Truman Show is about a television show that has recorded the life of Truman ever since he was born.

The television show is a worldwide phenomenon, the only catch is Truman does not know his whole life has been recorded. The life of Truman Burbank connects to the theme Voice and the story Plato, Allegory of the Cave because, in the end after discovering the truth of his life, Truman leaves the set and starts a new life in the real world on his own. Many things in life are said to be true or false by the viewpoint of the individual. They may be pre-determined due to religious beliefs or may be by the way they were taught by observations throughout their life. In , director Peter Weir released his film, The Truman Show, which revolves around a non-fictional character within a fictional world.

In The Truman Show, Truman, which is portrayed by Jim Carrey, lives in a normal world, or so he thinks. Truman was born into a reality TV show. From the moment that he was born, his life has been televised. Everyone in his world from his mom and dad, to even his wife and best friend, are actors. The set takes place in a super-sized dome right above the Hollywood Hills. The creator of this world,…. The Truman show demonstrates how much society affects the behaviors of the individuals who live inside of it. Throughout the movie Christoph conditions Truman to be afraid of sailing, swimming, or traveling to far off places. In the movie Truman's father is shown to have died in a massive storm by way of drowning. Because the set is a huge island, Christoph set it up so that Truman will never be able to leave because of his fear….

In the Truman Show, the main character, Truman, is adopted at birth by a company that wants to make a documentary of his entire life. Everything that happens to Truman is a result of decisions made by those in the company, especially the main person in charge, Christof. All of the events that take place in Truman's life including the sun and moon rising, all of the weather, and all of the human interaction that Truman has on a day-to-day basis. Everyone in the city of Seahaven where Truman was born and lived his whole life is just a part in the game as hired actors to work in Truman's created world. Throughout the movie, however, Truman begins to sense that some things are very odd in his life.

In modern societies, medicine is used every day to cure and prevent illnesses. There are three different types of medicine, these being Western Scientific, Complementary Alternative CAM and Traditional Medicine TM. Weir uses visual manipulation to show the flow of power within the film. Christof is introduced in a close up shot, with him in centre to show that he has power within the film. Also in the opening sequence the shows main character is introduced in a way to highlight the extreme lengths the media is willing to go to in order to maintain its ratings. Truman is seen talking to himself in his bathroom, unaware that he is being filmed through his bathroom mirror, and is being viewed live by a global audience.

When "The Truman Show" was released in , it was just another popular Hollywood flick, but its story is closely related to Plato's "Allegory of the Cave. As with most cinematic treachery, the movie's similarities are no coincidence. The writers drew from Plato's classic because it is such a universal story and is something that everyone can relate to in some way. When the film was released, the general viewing public didn't attend the theater with the intent to analyze and critique the film in relation to an ancient, revered, and highly intellectual tale.

Rather, they attended in order to gain a laugh or two from Jim Carey's psychotic antics; but, many of the ancient and universal thoughts and ideals can be skimmed from this Hollywood piece. I want to talk about the audience that is done throughout the movie. There are shots of fans watching the Truman show - Two elderly ladies, a Japanese family, a bar filled with people, and even a man in his bathtub. The different types of people illustrates that the same rules apply to every human being. Instead of living, we have gradually moved to a life planted in front of the TV, watching other people live.

This is why we LOVE myself included, of course to watch feel-good movies. Not a make-believe figure on the screen. But be extremely careful when you choose to watch TV, and know the exact reason why you choose to watch a particular program. HOME ESSAYS The Truman Show Essay. The Truman Show Essay Good Essays. In this scene, Christof argues that there is truth in Truman though he concedes the counterfeit quality of the world he created. Yet later on in the film, there is a scene where Marlon and Truman are sitting on the edge of a pier having a heart to heart.

Marlon pauses frequently in a way that the audience both outside and within the film assume is a result of his trouble in finding the right words to say. When the camera then pans out across the faces of the director Christof and other crew, we find that Marlon had no trouble in finding the right words, though instead was waiting for the right words to be given.
